PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This Jaeger-LeCoultre horizontal driver’s watch is an exceptionally rare example of 1930’s watchmaking. Dating to circa 1932 based on the movement number, it represents a specialised design created for drivers. It is designed to be worn on the side of the wrist so the time could be read while keeping both hands on the steering wheel. Born as a men’s watch, its compact proportions are a direct result of this highly functional purpose. The watch measures 23 x 29 mm.
The 18k yellow-gold case was produced by Edmund Jaeger, confirmed by the ‘EJ’ hallmarks. The French Eagle Head hallmarks are present on the case too, confirming it is made of 18k solid gold. The case design is distinctly French in character, featuring elegant cow-horn lugs and beautifully preserved surfaces that remain in exceptional condition. Such extravagantly executed gold cases are rarely encountered today, especially in this condition.
Equally remarkable is the rare original black dial, finished with thick gilt-painted markers that create striking contrast and depth. Horizontal Jaeger watches from this era are very scarce to begin with. Finding one with a black dial in original condition, with complimenting, high-grade French gold case, places this piece among the most desirable variants known.
Imagine this watch on the wrist in 1932, gripping the steering wheel of a Bugatti Type 49 Roadster. This was precisely the kind of context these watches were created for. A combination of speed, elegance and exclusivity. While these Jaeger-LeCoultre watches were very high-end items, original buyers where mostly wealthy industrialists or established businessman.
