PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Movado Ermeto was introduced in 1926, and is a perfect fusion of innovation and elegance. Designed to function as both a reliable watch and a stunning decorative object, this travel and pocket watch featured a brilliant design that provided protection, while being a practical and beautiful.
The name ‘Ermeto,’ derived from the Greek word for “hermetically sealed,” aptly describes its ingenious sliding case. When closed, the watch is safeguarded against dust, spills, and shocks, thanks to its dual-shell enclosure. To view the dial, the outer shells are smoothly slid apart, revealing the beautifully crafted timepiece and transforming it into a miniature masterpiece of horological design.
One of the Ermeto’s standout features is its innovative sliding mechanism, which also winds the movement. A simple action of opening and closing the case six times is sufficient to wind the watch for a full 24 hours. This groundbreaking mechanism, patented in 1927, eliminated the need for manual winding and highlighted Movado’s dedication to seamlessly integrating form and function.
The Ermeto came in four distinct sizes:
- Pullman: The largest model, measuring 100 x 70 mm, ideal for use as a decorative accessory on a dresser.
- Master: A mid-sized version at 54 x 37 mm, a sophisticated addition to a well-appointed desk.
- Normal: A practical and portable size at 48 x 34 mm, doubling as a desk clock.
- Baby: Designed for women, measuring 43 x 26 mm, perfect as a pendant or for carrying in a bag.
Throughout its production, the Ermeto was crafted in a variety of luxurious materials, including platinum, gold, silver, and steel. Many cases were further enhanced with exotic finishes such as lizard or calf leather, enamel, and lacquer, adding a touch of opulence to their functional design.
The Ermeto’s exceptional craftsmanship and pioneering design have made it a coveted collector’s item. Rare editions co-branded by renowned retailers like Cartier, Hermès, and Tiffany & Co. are particularly prized. These collaborations often feature precious metals and dual-signed dials, solidifying their status as treasured artifacts of 20th-century luxury.
