Omega Seamaster XVI ref. 2850 ‘Olympic Games’ 1956

Behold, a not so average Omega… Here’s why!

This Omega Seamaster XVI ref. 2850SC dates to 1956 and was released by Omega to celebrate their 25th year of being the official timekeeper for The Olympics Games. In 1956, the Olympics were held in Melbourne, Australia.

For this special anniversary, Omega made three different dial versions of the Omega Seamaster XVI.

  1. A Chinese lacquered dial featuring the Olympic Cross of Merit
  2. A Chinese lacquered dial featuring a written ‘Seamaster’-signature, and an applied and faceted ‘XVI’ signature.
  3. A metal dial featuring a written ‘Seamaster’-signature, and an applied and faceted ‘XVI’ signature.

The 1st dial variation was only available for people who were closely involved with the organization of the 1956 Olympic Games. This watch was could not be bought by privates. Presumably, only 100 examples of the first dial variation were produced, since Omega did not have the rights to use the Olympic Cross of Merit on their dial.

The 2nd and 3rd dial variation were available for the public, and where most probably also sold at the Olympic Games in Melbourne, in 1956. Visiting The Olympic Games in 1956, would have been a trip for only very wealthy individuals.  Imagine taking home, this very special Omega Seamaster XVI as a souvenir, as the icing on the cake for your trip! That’s Omega marketing…

Our Omega Seamaster XVI features the 2nd dial variation, with the mesmerizing Chinese lacquered dial and applied gold ‘XVI’-logo. Also note how the gold applied hour markers, are sophistically faceted. Simply stunning, and rarely seen on Omega watches at the time. The Chinese lacquer creates a deep gloss over the dial, which reflects the light beautifully. This is something, the more common and ‘regular’ metal dials (version 3), doesn’t have. The metal dials are more easily subject to patina and transforming to matt.

Furthermore, this mesmerizing Omega Seamaster XVI with automatic movement, features an 18kt yellow gold case, and a handmade leather strap in black with an original Omega buckle. The watch is in visual, and technical spectacular condition and will be a special addition to every wrist (watch collection)!

The watch measures 34 millimeters in diameter, excluding the Omega crown.
