PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Patek Philippe Ref. 3603 is a bold and historic reference from one of the most respected names in watchmaking, housing the Beta 21 — the first Swiss serially produced quartz movement, launched in 1970 by a consortium of Swiss manufacturers under the Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH).

Contrary to popular belief, the Beta 21 is not named after the number of brands involved, but instead stands for Beta 2.1 — the production evolution of CEH’s early quartz experiments. While the Beta 1 resonated at 8,192 Hz and required 14 divider stages (resulting in excessive battery drain), the Beta 2 reduced the frequency to 256 Hz, enabling a smooth-sweeping seconds hand via a vibration motor and offering significantly improved battery life. The Beta 2.1 (or Beta 21) further refined this into a commercially viable caliber, incorporating 110 integrated components, a date function with quickset, and was shared across a handful of elite Swiss brands.

In this Patek Philippe execution, the Beta 21 is housed in an architectural 18k yellow gold case, with precise proportions of 33.5 x 37.5 mm and a solid 11 mm thickness. The champagne dial is understated and elegant, punctuated by a date window at 6 o’clock and finished with onyx-filled, faceted markers.

The strap is a high-quality dark green Molequin, which complements the gold tones beautifully. However, the strap tapers too wide at the long end to fully close through the original 14 mm Patek Philippe-signed buckle. A custom strap solution can be arranged, depending on the future wearer’s wrist size and preferences.
