PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This Universal Genève Polerouter reference 20217-4 is an early example of one of the brand’s most iconic, and now reissued models. Produced in circa 1955, based on the movement serial number, it represents the first iteration of the Polerouter line. The stainless steel case measures 35.5 mm with a 41 mm lug to lug length and remains unpolished, preserving the original lines and proportions of the design. The in-house calibre 138SS was last serviced in May 2026.
The Polerouter was originally developed for pilots and crew members of Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), who began operating commercial flights over the North Pole in the 1950’s. These polar routes exposed watches to strong magnetic fields, requiring reliable and anti magnetic timepieces. Universal Genève answered this challenge with the Polerouter, a technically advanced and modern wristwatch that would become one of the defining designs of the decade.
The original black dial features a gilt cross hair layout, creating strong contrast and depth. Combined with the stainless steel outer ring and clean proportions, the watch has a distinctly mid century aesthetic that remains highly wearable today. With its original black dial, unpolished case, and historical importance as an early Polerouter, this is a highy attractive example for collectors.
