The meaning of Disco Volante
The term Disco Volante refers to the design of the watch case. Disco Volante means flying saucer in Italian, it is a nickname adopted by the Italian watch collectors’ community, which is commonly used for watches that have their lugs integrated in to the case of the watch. Disco Volante watches are also called ‘UFO’ or flying saucer watches. As the majority of the watches have lugs which holds a bracelet or strap, this design was immensely progressie at the time.
Nowadays we consider watches with a diameter of 28-33mm only suitable for woman, however, that wasn’t the case back in the days. In the 1930 -1950s, this was the standard size for a man’s watch. Woman’s watches where even smaller then, thinking of 12-25mm’s.
A brief history
These now desirable, round shaped vintage watches first saw light in the 1930s. The watches of that time where small in comparison with today standards and where made mostly out of chromed steel. The collectible variants nowadays are made of stainless steel, which was frequently called ‘staybrite steel’ or ‘acier inox’. The examples of stainless steel are made of outstanding quality. This is in addition one of the reasons, these examples are still among us after more than 80 years.
